Butler County to Implement $5 on Registered Vehicles

Aug 15, 2018 | Member News

Drivers in Butler County will have to pay an extra $5 to register their vehicle starting in November.

Act 89, which became law on November 25, 2013, established a special fund within the state treasury called “Fee for Local Use Fund.” As of January 1, 2015, a county may pass an ordinance to implement a fee of $5 for each vehicle registered to an address located in that county. The $5 county fee is collected by PennDOT at the time a vehicle is initially registered, the registration is renewed or the registration is transferred. These funds will be used by the county for transportation purposes or be allocated by the county in accordance with Section 9010 (c) of the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code. This $5 county fee is in addition to the registration fee.

The following county has passed an ordinance to implement the $5 fee that affects November 2018 registration renewal notices:

• Butler County – Effective November 1, 2018

PennDOT maintains a list of participating counties on the fact sheet, “Fee for Local Use – Participating Counties,” available on the Driver and Vehicle Services website. Agents must check the fact sheet each time they complete Forms MV-1, MV-4ST, MV-120 or MV-140 for a customer requesting an initial issuance, renewal or transfer of registration for any vehicle to verify that the customer’s county of residence is participating in the “Fee for Local Use.” If the county is participating, the agent must enter the $5 county fee in the appropriate section of the form.
