Democrat Pam Iovino defeated Republican D. Raja yesterday to win the special election for Pennsylvania’s 37th Senate district. Raja conceded the race last night as Iovino led by nearly 4,000 votes with more than 87 percent of the precincts reporting. Voter turnout was light as just under 30 percent of registered voters cast their ballots.

The 37th district includes most of Allegheny county’s southern and western suburbs, including Bethel Park, Mt. Lebanon, Bridgeville, Moon Township, Upper St. Clair, Sewickley, Jefferson Hills and Peters Township in Washington county.

Iovino, 62, is a retired Navy captain and served as former assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, a post appointed by President George W. Bush. Her victory brings the Democratic count to 22 of the 50 Senate seats.
