2024 Outdoor Recreation Statistics Released by Bureau of Economic Analysis

The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis released its 2024 statistics on outdoor recreation March 6. This information provides a look at outdoor recreation’s impact on the state’s economy.

According to the report, Pennsylvania’s outdoor recreation industry accounted for $20.4 billion, or 2%, of the Gross Domestic Product. The outdoor recreation industry employed 176,752 jobs, a 2.8% share of state employment. Overall, it accounted for $9.5 billion in compensation, a 1.7% share of state compensation.

Spending on RVing accounted for $ 713,795,000, which ranks Pennsylvania at 9th place. That number fell from 2023, which was recorded as $719,906,000.

The Bureau reported Pennsylvania ranked 8th among all states in outdoor recreation value added and 33rd among all states in outdoor recreation value added.

Nationally, RVing is the second largest conventional activity for the nation at $27.2 billion in current dollar value added and was the largest conventional activity in nine states.
