The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis released its 2024 statistics on outdoor recreation March 6. This information provides a look at outdoor recreation’s impact on the state’s economy.

According to the report, Pennsylvania’s outdoor recreation industry accounted for $20.4 billion, or 2%, of the Gross Domestic Product. The outdoor recreation industry employed 176,752 jobs, a 2.8% share of state employment. Overall, it accounted for $9.5 billion in compensation, a 1.7% share of state compensation.

Spending on RVing accounted for $ 713,795,000, which ranks Pennsylvania at 9^th place. That number fell from 2023, which was recorded as $719,906,000.

The Bureau reported Pennsylvania ranked 8^th among all states in outdoor recreation value added and 33^rd among all states in outdoor recreation value added.

Nationally, RVing is the second largest conventional activity for the nation at $27.2 billion in current dollar value added and was the largest conventional activity in nine states.
