Go RVing Owner Demographic Finds 49 New Median Age for RV Owners
RV owners are younger, more diverse and using their RVs more, according to Go RVing's 2025 Demographic Profile and Industry Insights. Market research firm IPSOS conducted the study, which offers a comprehensive analysis of current and former RV owners, as well as consumers who intend to purchase an RV in the near future.
Go RVing's 2025 demographic study found the median age of RV owners declined from 53 in 2021 to 49 in 2025, with 46 percent of owners falling within the 35-54 age range. First-time RV owners comprise of 36 percent of all RV owners. New growth audiences representing Hispanic Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans and the LGBTQ+ make up 30 percent of current RV owners.
RV owners are using their RVs more. The study found owners are using their RVs a median of 30 days per year, which is a 50 percent increase over the 20 days of usage in the 2021 study.
The study found the top three motivators for purchasing an RV are: unwinding and relaxing - 58 percent; spending time in nature - 57 percent; and visiting locations with natural beauty - 53 percent. The ability to travel with their pets was a factor for 43 percent of those surveyed. Other RVers cited the ability to accommodate remote work and alternative lifestyles. Twenty-two percent indicated that someone their home currently works remotely, and 54 percent indicated that work is done from an RV.
There is great opportunity for growth in the industry. Currently, 8.1 million American households own an RV, and the report found 16.9 million households express a strong interest in purchasing an RV within the next five years.Â
The study also found purchasing and financing of RVs is evolving. While digital resources are prevalent for researching an RV purchase, 94 percent of transactions occur in person and 71 percent of buyers are opting for new RVs. For financing, 45 percent of purchases are paid for with cash, while 27 percent utilize dealer financing and 20 percent opt for private financing.
Younger and more diverse buyers, evolving lifestyle needs and increasing technological integration are transforming the RV industry. With 16.9 million households interested in buying an RV, the industry is prime for expansion.
