Thrive Outside Communities logoPittsburgh was recently named the newest Thrive Outside community, a national designation recognizing regional efforts to expand outdoor access and strengthen community connections. Pennsylvania is one of only two states in the nation with two Thrive Outside communities — both Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are among just 15 designated nationwide.

The initiative unites partners across the region to open more doors to outdoor recreation through schools, strengthen youth development and career pathways, and reimagine parks and public spaces as vibrant centers of community impact. It is rooted in the belief that outdoor experiences are vital to physical health, emotional well-being, and lifelong learning. It connects youth and families to provide outdoor experiences.

“I’ve seen it in communities across the Commonwealth — when we get outside, we thrive. Spending time outdoors helps us feel better, connect with our neighbors, and strengthen our local economies,” says Nathan Reigner, Pennsylvania Director of Outdoor Recreation.

The Outdoor Foundation started the initiative which is a collaboration between city, county and state agencies, educators, recreation providers and community-based organizations.

It operates with three committees:

Thrive Outside is a nationwide movement led by the Outdoor Foundation and its partners to build and support communities dedicated to increasing outdoor access for youth and families. It uses a “backbone organization” to manage community efforts. Local partners form a steering committee, and community partners work together to benefit the community.
