President Donald Trump signed a proclamation on New Year’s Eve delaying increased tariffs on upholstered furniture, kitchen cabinets and vanities for a year. He cited ongoing trade talks.

He imposed a 25% tariff on those goods in September, but the proclamation delays a 30% tariff on upholstered furniture and a 50% tariff on kitchen cabinets and vanities. The additional tariffs were set to take effect on January 1.

The president has said the U.S. has severe trade imbalances and the tariffs on furniture will “bolster American industry and protect national security.”
