RVIA Sets GMI Enforcement Effective Date for 2028 Model YearPRVCA to Offer Seminar during Education Days at America's Largest RV Show® June 2026 | RVIA
The Ground Monitor Interrupter (GMI) requirement was published in the 2026 edition of the National Electric Code (NEC). All RVs with 30A or 50A electrical service must have a GMI, which is a loss-of-ground device. The GMI protects the RV by monitoring the ground connection. If the ground connection is lost, the GMI disconnects the power to the RV. Without the GMI, RVs can produce a “hot skin condition.” The term is used to describe when the RV’s metal exterior, metal frame or other metal parts become electrified. This is a serious electrical safety hazard caused by improper grounding or electrical faults. The GMI will test the receptacle it is plugged into to ensure it is wired correctly and has a proper ground connection. If the wiring is incorrect or it has a loss of ground connection, the GMI will not allow electricity to pass through or will disconnect the power if the ground loss occurs during operation. The requirement was delayed since there were not fully developed GMIs available for RV use in manufacturing. RVIA’s Standards Steering Committee monitored GMI availability and now feel confident there will be sufficient GMIs available for use in RV manufacturing to meet the new effective date and enforcement with the start of the 2028 model year production. RVIA is working to educate manufacturers, dealers, campgrounds and consumers about the new devices and how to prepare for their implementation. The Pennsylvania Recreation Vehicle and Camping Association (PRVCA) will offer a seminar during Education Days at America’s Largest RV Show® in Hershey, Pa. Mike Sokol will present “RV Electricity: Getting Ready for the Ground Monitor Interrupters” on Monday, Sept.14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The seminar is free for PRVCA members. Register at https://www.largestrvshow.com/industry-dealers/registration. Pre-registration is required to attend. Sokol will also offer a GMI seminar for consumers during America’s Largest RV Show® Sept. 16-20. |
